about

This recording was originally released in 2006 and features music developed by this group over several years of live performance around Sydney in the early 2000s, and features pianist Matt McMahon, bassist Lloyd Swanton and drummer Simon Barker. At that time, there weren't many jazz trumpet quartet albums, and I was keen to explore this instrumentation. I was also interested in trying to create an approach to jazz composition which focussed upon a combining minimalistic materials, with episodic forms and layered textures. This recording was awarded the 2008 Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Ensemble, and was nominated for Australian Jazz Composition of the Year, and Best Australian Contemporary Jazz Album.
